You can put out the fire
and never put an end to the smoke.
The one who did not rise to the dignity of fire
ends by conforming to the modesty of smoke.
The one who did not have a hand in lighting it
ends up by giving that hand
and being left alone with the smoke.
The one who does not pretend to warm anything or even to being warmed
hides in the secret of being smoke.
But the secret of smoke is double.
First; the smoke warms too.
Secondly; and most important: the smoke is older than the fire.
