Just as we cannot keep the glance steady for long,
so we cannot keep up happiness for long
nor make the winding down of love
the free gift of thought the earth suspended in its canticle.
We cannot even stand for long
the proportions of silence
when something visits it.
Still less, when nothing visits it.
Man cannot stand man much of the time
nor what it’s not man and yet he can hold up
the limitless weight of all that does not exist.
